In Memoriam Natalie Boymel Kampen

Tally Kampen (former JIAAW Visiting Professor and co-director of Brown's Arts of Rome's Provinces seminar) died on Sunday, August 12, 2012. Contributions can be made in her name to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. She will be missed.

 

Biography

Natalie Boymel Kampen held degrees in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University, and taught at Barnard College and Columbia University between 1988 and 2009. Chair of Women's Studies at Barnard from 1988 to 1995, she taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in Feminist Theory. Her teaching in Art History included courses on Roman art and architecture and on gender theory. She was the author of well-regarded books and articles on Roman art and gender, social status and sexuality, as well as on the representation of history and biography in Roman imperial sculpture. Her last book, Family Fictions in Roman Art: Essays on the Representation of Powerful People, was published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press. 

She had recently retired from Barnard, and relocated to Rhode Island.
