2024 HHMI Fellow: Janet Joseph

Congratulations to rising 3rd-year graduate student Janet Joseph on being awarded a 2024 HHMI Gilliam Fellowship!

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) announced 50 new Gilliam fellowships awarded to graduate students conducting outstanding research in their respective scientific fields and their advisers, who are committed to advancing equity and inclusion in science. For up to three years, each adviser-student pair will receive an annual award totaling $53,000.

Janet is a degree candidate in the Laura Stroud lab and is co-advised by Patrycja Dubielecka. Janet was pleased to share that “Dr. Dubielecka and I will work together to form collaborations with the departments at Brown University to create a pipeline program that highlights and equips underrepresented minority graduate students with the knowledge, tools, and skills they need to be competitive in academia. Graduate students will have the opportunity to receive mentorship from successful principal investigators with similar values. The overall goal is to increase the representation of URM students in academia”. Additionally, Janet recently received the NSF GRFP award.
