Savannah Monitor Lizard


Lateral view, X-ray video of gular pumping in Varanus exanthematicus. Artificial breathing sounds have been added to the video to distinguish costal aspiration (sucking sound) from gular pumping (pumping sound). Note that when the gular cavity compresses, the lungs inflate. Gular pumping in lizards only occurs during and immediately after exercise.
