Prizes for Student Papers
JIAAW offers three prizes to honor undergraduate students who have shown great accomplishment in the study of archaeology through their writing. Submission deadline January 21, 2014.

Archaeology for the People
JIAAW announces a competition for accessible and engaging articles that showcase any aspect of archaeology of potential interest to a wide readership. We offer a prize of $5,000. The deadline is September 1, 2014.

Fall/Winter Issue of "Inventory"
The latest issue of "Inventory", the newsletter of the Joukowsky Institute, is now available online, with stories on the Joukowsky Institute Publications series, International Archaeology Day, a new field project in Sardinia, using RTI to reveal a relief on an Old Kingdom block, and our competition for accessible archaeological writing, “Archaeology for the People”.

JIP 3 and 4 Now Available
The third and fourth volumes in the Joukowsky Institute Publication (JIP) series, Locating the Sacred: Theoretical Approaches to the Emplacement of Religion, edited by Claudia Moser and Cecelia Feldman, and Violence and Civilization: Studies of Social Violence in History and Prehistory, edited by Roderick Campbell, are now available from Oxbow Books.

JIAAW's Claudia Moser successfully defended her doctoral dissertation, "Material Witnesses: The Altars of Republican Rome and Latium and the Memory of Sacrifice," on Friday, December 6th.

Petra Geophysical Results Published
"A Geophysical Investigation of a Newly Discovered Early Bronze Age Site Near Petra, Jordan," by JIAAW's Clive Vella, Emanuela Bocancea, and Susan E. Alcock, with Thomas M. Urban and Christopher Tuttle, will appear in the February 2014 issue of Journal of Archaeological Science and is currently available online.

Sandiford Published in Egyptian Archaeology
The Autumn 2013 issue of Egyptian Archaeology includes an article on "Ptolemaic Houses at Abydos", written by Joukowsky Institute graduate student Timothy Sandiford.

Leppard Joins Southern Connecticut State University's Faculty
Recent JIAAW alumnus Thomas P. Leppard (Ph.D. 2013) has been appointed Adjunct Lecturer in Anthropology at Southern Connecticut State University, starting in Fall 2013.

Training for Providence Teachers
JIAAW, in collaboration with RISD Museum and the Haffenreffer Museum, is helping middle-school teachers learn to "Think Like an Archaeologist" this summer.

JIAAW Director Sue Alcock was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the academy's annual meeting.

Bestock Appointed to Named Chair
The Corporation of Brown University has named JIAAW's Laurel Bestock the Vartan Gregorian Assistant Professor of Archaeology and the Ancient World and Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies, effective July 1, 2013.

Van Dommelen Named Haffenreffer Fellow
JIAAW's Peter van Dommelen is among the first group of Faculty Fellows of the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology for the 2013-2014 academic year.
