At NIH
The Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE)
The principal goal of the OITE is to enhance the training experience of NIH trainees (postbacs, graduate students, and postdocs) and it is a fantastic resource for graduate students. Indeed, the OITE is the office at NIH that coordinates most aspects of the NIH graduate student experience outside of the lab. As the NIH trainee population is focused specifically on biomedial research, the OITE is able to offer career development programs tailored specifically to the career goals of young biomedical scientists. The OITE organizes workshops to improve article writing and mentoring skills, convenes panel discussions about writing successful grants and applying for academic positions, puts together the annual graduate student retreat and research symposium, and much more. At Brown
The Office of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies
The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies oversees admissions, recruitment, tracking, support, and professional development for students and postdocs in the Division of Biology and Medicine. The Office also facilitates fellowship and training grant applications in order to increase funding for graduate students and postdocs.
Sheridan Center for Advanced Teaching and Learning
The Sheridan Center is supports Brown University’s long-standing commitment to excellence in teaching and learning through a broad range of programs, services, activities and resources for the Brown community. The Center provides assistance in syllabus development and conducts seminars and workshops leading to three Certificate levels. Many graduate students partake in the training offered here as part of their professional development.
Writing Center
The Writing Center is a free academic support service for all members of the Brown Community. The Center is staffed by graduate students from a variety of academic disciplines. Staff members are experienced writers and teachers who participate in ongoing training in composition theory and practice. In addition to holding one-on-one conferences, Writing Center Associates offer various workshops on writing for interested groups. Writing Center Associates are prepared to discuss all stages of the writing process, from finding a topic up through revision and editing strategies. Associates can help writers deal with writer's block, audience awareness, argumentation, organization, grammar, research skills, the conventions of academic writing, and issues of clarity and style.
