The timeline below offers a year-to-year sketch of academic requirements, milestones, and activities.

  • Attend annual NSGP Retreat in August
  • Attend Orientation and other Graduate Division required classes/training
  • Undertake at least 2 laboratory research rotations (with potential thesis mentors pre-approved by NSGP Director)
  • Attend NSGP In-House Seminars
  • Attend NSGP Seminars
  • Attend NSGP Ethics & Skills Seminars/workshops, when available
  • Attend NSGP Student Retreat or Brown-NIH GPP Retreat
  • Attend SfN Meeting
  • Pass Comprehensive Exams - Fall & Spring
  • Pass all required core classes, including RCR
  • Attend Neuropracticum Lab course
  • Participate in Recruitment activities in February
  • Have a dissertation mentor approved by NSGP Director, ideally by June 1st
  • Help organize annual NSGP Retreat in August
  • Form Thesis Committee with NSGP Director approval
  • TA for one semester (classes assigned by NSGP)
  • Present at NSGP In-House Seminar
  • Attend NSGP Seminars
  • Attend NSGP Ethics & Skills Seminars/workshops, when available
  • Participate in NSGP writing workshops
  • Apply for external fellowship
  • Attend NSGP Student Retreat or Brown-NIH GPP Retreat
  • Have organizational meeting with Thesis Committee to discuss Preliminary Exam
  • Participate in Recruitment activities in February
  • Pass Preliminary Exam before August 31st; return signed form to the Graduate School, and copy the NSGP Coordinator
  • Present poster at annual NSGP Retreat in August
  • Present at NSGP In-House Seminar
  • Attend NSGP Seminars
  • Present poster or talk at NSGP Student Retreat or Brown-NIH GPP Retreat
  • Organize the Brown NSGP/Carney Institute Social at SfN (subset of 3rd years)
  • Apply for external fellowship
  • Participate in Recruitment activities in February
  • Have annual thesis committee meeting before August 31st; return signed form to the Graduate School, and copy the NSGP Coordinator
  • Two 4th year students serve as Student Reps
  • Present poster at annual NSGP Retreat in August
  • Present at NSGP In-House Seminar
  • Present poster or talk at NSGP Student Retreat or Brown-NIH GPP Retreat
  • Participate in Recruitment activities in February
  • Have annual thesis committee meeting before August 31st; return signed form to the Graduate School, and copy the NSGP Coordinator
  • Finish lab work
  • Present poster at annual NSGP Retreat in August
  • Present poster or talk at NSGP Student Retreat or Brown-NIH GPP Retreat
  • Present at NSGP In-House Seminar
  • Write papers
