Brown’s open sailing team charts course to national championship victory

At the College Sailing Open Fleet Race National Championship, the Bears secured a historic win, earned individual honors and reinforced the team’s place among the nation’s top programs.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Brown University’s open (also known as co-ed) sailing team captured the 2026 College Sailing Open Fleet Race National Championship, capping a standout season with a dominant performance in St. Petersburg, Florida.

After winning the Western Semifinal by 33 points over defending national champion Stanford University, the Bears advanced to the finals and sailed into the top spot on Friday, May 22. The victory marks the program’s first win at the event since 1948.

“We certainly had the team that could do it,” Head Coach John Mollicone said. “We went into the end kind of knowing, ‘All right, this is ours.’ They stayed calm, cool and collected, and they got the job done.”

The team spent significant time training in Florida and preparing for the many factors that can influence sailing conditions, from heat and humidity to wind and current strength. Mollicone credited their success not only to talent on the water, but the many support systems available to Brown’s student-athletes.

“The resources that our team has here at Brown have helped them tremendously,” he said, nodding to Athletics and Recreation staff like Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Pimentel. “It helped our [athletes] be focused and in really good shape, physically and mentally.”

Brown University student-athletes from the 2026 National Champion Open Sailing Team join the Brown Bears Podcast to discuss their new national title.

Brown ultimately defeated Stanford by 13 points after 14 races in each division. In addition to the national title, Class of 2026 graduate Caroline Keeffe-Jones earned the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association’s Mitchell M. Brindley Trophy, awarded to the top crew in college sailing.

The Bears also finished third overall in the association’s Leonard M. Fowle Trophy standings, which recognize the top overall program across all collegiate sailing national championships. After a particularly difficult period for many members of the team, including the loss of fellow sailor Liam O’Keefe, Mollicone said the win was particularly meaningful.

“I was really proud of the resiliency this class has had,” he said. “There’s been a lot of adversity, and to see these kids grow stronger from all of it, get closer and fight hard — it was a special one to win this year.”

Although the team said goodbye to many top sailors after they graduated during Brown’s 258th Commencement and Reunion Weekend, much of the roster will return next season, and Mollicone said they’re eager to keep up the momentum.

“Everybody is incredibly motivated to go do it again,” he said. “We’ve got a great program, and I think we’re lined up to be competing for these titles every year.”
