Capital projects at Brown are governed by the Capital Project Review and Approval Policy. The policy outlines how capital projects are initiated, considered, planned for and approved. Several committees provide oversight of and input into this process:
- The Space Committee, chaired by the Associate Provost for Academic Space, reviews and approves Capital Projects with a total project budget up to and including $1 million, and raises issues and concerns of a broad or strategic priority with regard to Capital Projects to CPWG for review and direction.
- The Capital Planning Working Group (CPWG), chaired by the Executive Vice President for Planning and Policy, advises the President on Capital Projects with total project budgets of greater than $1 million. CPWG makes recommendations to the President as appropriate with regard to planning initiation, design and construction authorization. CPWG monitors Capital Projects throughout all stages for consistency with institutional mission and priorities and project objectives, adherence to approved project budgets and financial funding plans, and other matters which may arise. Projects of more than $10 million are also subject to reviews and approvals by the Corporation Committee on Budget & Finance.
- The Capital Planning Committee meets quarterly and provides briefings and updates on Capital Projects to a broader group of stakeholders, including the chairs of the Faculty Executive Committee and the Medical Faculty Executive Committee and the academic deans.
