Call for nominations – Dean of the Graduate School

September 11, 2025

I am writing to invite nominations for candidates to serve as the next Dean of the Graduate School. Graduate students play a central role in advancing Brown’s mission of education and research, and a strong Graduate School is crucial to training the next generation of scholars and practitioners. The Dean will have the opportunity to develop a strategic vision for the Graduate School, to collaborate with other academic leaders to oversee graduate admission and funding, and to work with programs across the University to foster excellence in graduate education student and support growth and success.

I will chair the search committee, which includes the following members:

  • Francesca Beaudoin, Academic Dean of the School of Public Health
  • Keisha Blain, Professor of Africana Studies and History
  • Ugur Cetintemel, Professor of Computer Science
  • Junehyuk Jung, Associate Professor of Mathematics
  • Nancy Khalek, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and History
  • Kevin LoGiudice, PhD candidate in Engineering and chair of Graduate Student Council
  • James Russell, Deputy Dean of the Faculty
  • Katherine Smith, Senior Associate Dean of Biology Education
  • Hunter Watkins, MFA candidate in Literary Arts

On behalf of the committee, I am writing to solicit nominations (including self-nominations) of Brown colleagues whom we ought to consider for this important leadership role. The Dean should be a tenured faculty member with a strong record of teaching and scholarship and significant administrative experience. Demonstrated interest in working with and advising graduate students is required, as is intellectual curiosity and the ability to engage with a wide range of academic disciplines. The individual should have a commitment to diversity and inclusion and be able to articulate strategies for improving the climate for all graduate students. The successful candidate will also have excellent organizational skills, managerial talent, and financial acumen.

Please send nominations, including a brief description of why you think the nominee is well-qualified to be Dean of the Graduate School, to Elizabeth Doherty, Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs, who is staffing the search committee ([email protected]). The search committee also welcomes your views about the attributes we should be seeking in the next Dean and your input about how to position the Graduate School for success in the coming years.

The position description can be found here.

Nominations should be submitted by Wednesday, September 24. All nominations and inquiries will be held in strict confidence.

Sincerely,

Francis J. Doyle III, Provost
