Biography

Dr. Emanuele Di Lorenzo is a Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Brown University. Prior to that he was Professor and Director of the Ocean Science and Engineering program at Georgia Tech, which he co-founded in 2016. He is also Chairman and co-founder of Ocean Visions. He received a Ph.D. in ocean and climate sciences from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 2003 and joined the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2004 and the Brown faculty in 2022. He is internationally recognized for his work and leadership in understanding ocean climate and its impact on marine ecosystems and coastal communities. More recently, Di Lorenzo efforts have focused on transforming research and knowledge generated in academia into equitable and practicable ocean-based solutions to climate by co-founding in 2019 the Ocean Visions and in 2022 the United Nations Ocean Decade Center on Ocean-Climate Solutions.

Advancing Solutions for Ocean & Climate Health

While governments still struggle to implement effective strategies and policies to address the growing threats of climate change, a global ecosystem for advancing ocean-based solutions to climate is self-organizing across non-profits, industry, academia, and the innovation startup world. In this talk, I will discuss some recent advances from the Ocean Visions (www.oceanvisions.org) in co-desiging and deploying climate solutions roadmaps that enhance the natural power of the ocean to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the deep ocean. These ocean carbon dioxide removal (ocean CDR) strategies, while still under important scrutiny by the science and stakeholder communities, have become necessary to meet our climate targets (e.g. the 1.5 C warming) as outlined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences.
