Interim Agreement Reached with Postdoc Labor Union

July 7, 2025

We are pleased to share that Brown University and the Brown University Postdoc Labor Organization (BPLO) have reached an interim agreement that will remain in effect through June 30, 2026, or until a final collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is ratified — whichever comes first. As we continue to work with union leaders toward a long-term contract, the interim agreement reflects the University’s continued commitment to good-faith negotiations and outlines an updated compensation structure for eligible postdoctoral employees while bargaining continues.

Key Provisions of the Interim Agreement

  • Updated Minimum Compensation: Effective July 1, 2025, Brown will raise the minimum annual compensation for eligible postdoctoral employees, in line with the National Institutes of Health’s recently updated recommended pay levels according to the employee’s experience level. Brown will determine the employee’s level based on their years of experience as a postdoc as of June 30, 2026. Please see the Office of University Postdoctoral Affairs webpage on compensation for more information.
  • Eligibility: The agreement applies to postdoctoral research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and deans’ faculty fellows who receive a salary or stipend from Brown.
  • Spring 2026 Compensation for Deans’ Faculty Fellows: Fellows hired to teach one course in Spring 2026 (50% FTE) will receive $20,074.25 in compensation.
  • Additional Compensation Flexibility: Brown may continue to offer compensation above the stated minimums at the time of appointment or as merit/equity increases.

We remain committed to negotiating a comprehensive, long-term collective bargaining agreement, and we appreciate BPLO’s partnership in reaching this interim agreement.

Sincerely,

Francis J. Doyle III, Provost

Janet Blume, Deputy Provost
