Visiting the Institute

The Joukowsky Institute is located in Rhode Island Hall at 60 George Street (at the corner of George Street and Prospect Street, at the southwest corner of Brown University's Main Green), in Providence, Rhode Island.

We are a short walk away from downtown Providence, about 45 minutes drive or train-ride from Boston, and about 3 hours from New York. Amtrak runs to Providence from both New York and Boston, as does Greyhound. From Boston, visitors can also take the MBTA Commuter Rail train or the Peter Pan bus.

For those driving to Brown, parking can sometimes be an issue. There is metered parking on Prospect Street and on Waterman Street, close to the Institute. Unmetered spaces are slightly farther away, but are often challenging to find. Brown has one visitor parking lot (located at the intersection of Power and Thayer Streets), which charges $3.00 per hour, or $15.00 for a full day.

By plane, visitors can fly into TF Green airport, which is about 15 minutes away from the campus, or into Boston's Logan Airport, which is about 45 minutes away. Directions from each follow:

From TF Green, you may either take a taxi, bus, or ride-share service (Brown University’s campus is located about 10 miles from the TF Green Airport):

Airport Taxis ((401) 737-2868) are located on the outer curb after exiting the lower level of the airport. One-way taxi fare is approximately $30. Taxis are available 24 hours a day. It is not necessary to pre-book a taxi pickup from the airport; taxis are always ready and waiting on the street outside the baggage claim area.

LYFT offers pick-up and drop-off transportation services for passengers. One-way fares between campus and TF Green range from about $15 to about $35, depending on demand and conditions.
Pick-up: Upon your arrival at the airport, request a ride on the LYFT mobile app once you get your luggage from Baggage Claim on the Lower Level of the terminal. Arriving Passengers using LYFT may only be picked up in the area designated for TNCs. The designated pick-up area is located on the outer arrivals roadway along the purple colored curb, which is located directly outside the Lower Level Arrivals/Baggage Claim area of the terminal. Passengers should follow the purple signage located outside the Lower Level of the terminal directing passengers to the pick-up location.
Drop-off: Departing Passengers may only be dropped off on the Upper Level "Departures" Roadway of the terminal.

Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) bus #1 picks up at the far end of the commercial roadway in front of the airport terminal and has a stop on campus at 'Tunnel and Thayer'. You can purchase a ticket online or pay a cash fare of $2.00.

From Logan International Airport (Boston), you can either take a Peter Pan bus, or the train:

Bus:
The Peter Pan Bus (401-331-7500, 888-331-7500 (toll-free)  or 800-343-9999 (toll-free)) will cost $31 one-way to Providence, or $62 round-trip.  Buses run leave Logan twice daily, at 9:15 am and 5:30 pm, both weekdays and weekends.  Buses circulate throughout the terminal area, so can be caught at any terminal. The Peter Pan Bus will drop you off outside of the Rhode Island Convention Center (99 West Exchange Street), which is just a short (uphill) walk from the Institute. Returning to the airport, the Peter Pan Bus leaves the Rhode Island Convention Center stop (99 West Exchange Street) twice daily, at 7:15 am and 12:45 pm, arriving at Logan one hour and 25 minutes later.  The Peter Pan Bus schedule can be viewed online, at peterpanbus.com (select “Boston Logan Airport” and “Providence Downtown”).

Train:
To take the train from Logan, you need to first take the Silver Line bus, operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (better known as the MBTA or the "T"), to South Station. Silver Line service from Logan Airport is always free. If you're headed to Logan Airport, transfers from the Red Line to the Silver Line are also free. The Silver Line runs every 5-12 minutes, between 5:30 am and 12:15 am, daily and stops at all terminals on the baggage claim level.  It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach South Station from Logan.  For a full schedule of the Silver Line, visit www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/lines/?route=SILVER and click on the Silver Line Schedule icon at the top right.

At South Station, you can catch either the Commuter Rail or Amtrak to Providence.  The Commuter Rail costs $14.65-$15.25 one-way.  For a full schedule of the Commuter Rail, visit https://www.mbta.com/schedules/CR-Providence/timetable or call 1-800-392-6100.  Amtrak costs between $15 and $49 one-way from South Station to Providence.  The full schedule for Amtrak can be found at https://www.amtrak.com or by calling 1-800-872-7245.  From the train station, it is a very short taxi ride to Brown (or even an easy walk).
