The Swearer Center regularly publishes reports and plans, such as our Strategic Plan (2016) and Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). 

Community Engaged Scholarship and Action: A New Plan for the Swearer Center for Public Service 
The Swearer Center Strategic Plan was developed through close consultation and the invaluable assistance of a wide variety of our constituents and stakeholders and reflects an ambitious agenda for the Swearer Center and community-engaged scholarship at Brown.

Swearer Center Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 
This past year, Brown initiated a planning process that yielded a Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan for the University; this plan established a blueprint for how to make our campus a truly diverse and inclusive community. As part of this process, the Swearer Center hosted community listening and feedback events to engage the local Providence community in these important conversations. Our DIAP calls for action along five goals: staff hiring, staff development, co-curriculum development, student development and community engagement. For each of these objectives, we have articulated an action plan, responsible parties, a timeline, collaborators, assessment and a plan for reporting our progress. 

Social Innovation Initiative (SII) Strategic Plan Action Steps
The Swearer Center’s ambitious strategic plan challenged SII to identify ways to expand the reach of social innovation programs beyond our Fellowship and to explore ways to engage the community more deeply in our work. Following is how SII plans to move towards realization of the goals and priorities outlined in the center’s strategic plan.

Academic Programs Implementation Plan 
The Swearer Center’s Academic Programs team is responsible for coordinating the Center’s programmatic relationships to academic units across campus; overseeing curriculum development and teaching by Center staff and fellows; and developing resources and partnerships to support community-engaged teaching and research by members of the Brown community (faculty, students and staff) and in partnership with off-campus partners and stakeholders. 

2015-16 Annual Progress Report, D'Abate Community School 
Rhode Island 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) Initiative
As a partner with William D'Abate Elementary School in Olneyville, Brown University has helped to provide after-school programming, in-class tutoring and summer camps to its students for more than 15 years. 2017 Ocean State Innovate Report
In early 2016, a steering committee of local leaders came together to think about new ways to harness community knowledge to address Rhode Island’s most significant challenges. These conversations turned into a two-day convening of a cross section of Rhode Islanders, working together to break down silos and explore profound solutions to these pressing issues. On March 11 and 12, 2017, residents, community leaders and college students gathered to participate in Ocean State Innovate, where they engaged in creative problem-solving for a better Rhode Island. 

2016 National Assessment of Service and Community Engagement (NASCE)
Piloted in 2006 and fully implemented in 2009, the National Assessment of Service and Community Engagement (NASCE) has grown over the past 7 years into a widely used and respected assessment tool for measuring and expressing community engagement among U.S. colleges and universities. Today, more than 57,000 undergraduates from more than 80 distinct institutions across 20 states have completed the NASCE survey. Brown University administered the survey for the first time in 2016.

Swearer Center Learning Outcomes
​The Swearer Center has identified a core set of learning outcomes and associated competencies that will inform the development of student programs and initiatives and guide our assessment and evaluation work. This document outlines six high-level learning outcomes and a series of associated competencies.

2012 & 2016 NSLVE Campus Report: Student Voting Rates for Brown University 
The National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement (NSLVE) is a signature initiative of the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education (IDHE) at the Tisch College of Civic Life, Tufts University. The mission of IDHE is to shift college and university priorities and culture to advance political learning, agency and equity. It achieve its mission through research, resource development, technical assistance and advocacy.
