Christmas Island, Australian Territory
The origins of Christmas Island’s date back to the late 19th century, when the British crown leased the land to mine its natural resources. In the following century, hundreds of indentured Chinese and Malay workers died while working in the Phosphate mines. This project aims to trace the diaspora of these Asian workers and how the island’s history of racial tension has affected its settlements and their communities in their present form.
