Intergenerational Transmission of Educational Advantage? A Qualitative Assessment with Latinx College Students

The aim of the study is to understand how Latinx college students from mixed-educated households navigate college settings. To do so, I plan to interview 60 Latinx college students to better understand parent’s socialization influences on their collegiate experiences. Do students identify more with their middle-class parent’s background or the background of their working-class and poor parent? What sorts of extracurricular activities do they participate in, and how do they identify their social class background? Answering these questions, and others will inform what kind of supports might be necessary for racial and ethnic college students that do not meet the “traditional” definition of first-generation. Further, understanding students’ experiences can illuminate parent’s socialization practices on students and shape their navigational practices in college.
