Drawing Embryos Together: Methods of Visual Thinking in Developmental Biology

Faculty Sponsor: Lukas B Rieppel

Scientists, particularly developmental biologists, have long relied on images to describe, observe, record, and craft arguments about the natural world. Through archival research at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Beatrice studied the embryo drawings of Edmund Beecher Wilson, an influential late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century developmental biologist, and the use of visual thinking in his research. Beatrice believes a greater awareness and appreciation of the intimate relationship between art and science is crucial in demystifying aspects of science and the scientific process, making it more accessible and exciting to a larger audience.
