Project:
Rudine Sims Bishop describes children’s literature as either mirrors, windows, or sliding glass doors. Mirrors because books can reflect our own experiences back at us. This concept in literature is important when considering the limited number of mirrors for children of color, especially Indigenous and Native American children. In this project, I’m curating a list of valuable children’s/YA literature that centers Native and Indigenous perspectives and aim to format/create a comprehensive lesson plan for K-12 teachers. As a member of the Navajo Nation, this project will help me take the first step towards improving the lack of Native and Indigenous representation in ELA classrooms.
