Redefining Pregnancy: Transmasculine and Non-Binary Experiences of Natal Care

Elliot Harrison-Lee '23 is in Brown's UG/MPH program studying Medical Anthropology and Maternal and Child Health. He hopes to work at the intersection of health policy and community activism to increase awareness around health disparities. Since high school, he has been involved in LGBT community organizations and advocacy groups, and is excited to continue that work in a professional and academic capacity. Elliot is also a TA for the introductory sequence of Public Health courses at Brown, and takes great joy in both teaching and learning.

Project:

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of gender diversity within the context of pregnancy. However, many transmasculine and non-binary individuals who choose to carry children face specific challenges that healthcare providers remain unaware of, leading to significant health risks for both parent and child. This project will collect and analyze the narratives of transgender patients who have experienced pregnancy through ethnographic interviews, laying the groundwork for a guide on competent transgender natal care and a shift in the current paradigm between natal care providers and their trans patients.
