Latinx Migrants: Movement of Memory beyond Borders

Liliana Mack is an undergraduate student concentrating in Ethnic Studies, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science. She has worked as a research assistant at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS). Liliana is pursuing a research project that explores the intersections of memory, migration, and citizenship. Eventually, they'd like to complete a thesis in Ethnic Studies and design workshops, courses, and projects related to Latinx digital humanities in the future.

Project:

How might migration become the condition of memory? The project, Latinx Migrants: Movement of Memory beyond Borders, will analyze the impact memory has on racialization narratives and sites of memory that no longer conform to stable geographic environments. While Latinx migrants are not a homogenous group, many utilize memory to navigate Fronteras fragmentadas (fragmented borders): a space where memory transforms markers of integration into cultural weapons that racialize Latinxs. This project hopes to uplift migration memories through Latinx testimonies and fill a gap in US public memory by shining a light on predominant racial narratives of Latinx immigrants.
