Maria will examine how solar homes in rural Honduras avoid emitting greenhouse gases. She will compare calculation methodologies with field study results and incorporate her findings into a project being done for the U.S. Initiative on Joint Implementation by Enersol Associates, a nonprofit international development organization that works to improve the quality of life in developing countries by fostering the use of solar energy for rural electrification.

Maria received her J.D. from Duke University Law School. She was a Rosenthal Fellow in International Relations. She is currently an attorney with Baker and Hostetler in Washington, D.C. where she focuses her practice on environmental law, representing clients in environmental litigation as well as administrative law matters. Her educational background in environmental science allows María to understand and analyze legal and environmental issues from a multidisciplinary standpoint. María's science background also compliments her work in the government contracts area, where she assists clients with internal investigations and advises on government contract disputes involving environmental issues. In addition to her environmental work, María represents clients in investigations involving Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) compliance, with a focus on Latin America, and Brazil, in particular. She has represented corporations making voluntary disclosures to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has also worked on international arbitration matters. María is a native Spanish speaker, which, combined with her fluency in Portuguese, enables María to effectively work on international matters ranging from environmental cases to internal investigations.
