Sculpture: A Medium for Intellectual Growth

Faculty Sponsor: Paul Myoda

Maya created eight stainless steel and bronze sculptures at a nonprofit sculpture collective in West Oakland, California, developing a strong set of metal fabrication techniques. These eight abstract sculptures were exhibited at Brown in October 2012 in a show entitled “What I Found in the Desert.” They were created in response to the socioeconomic difficulties that are so palpable in this city.

Maya graduated with a B.A. in Visual Art and English from Brown University in May 2015. She primarily work as an oil painter and a sculptor in stainless steel and bronze, and has completed a public sculpture on permanent display at Brown University's English Department building. She has worked as an instructor of adult and youth metalworking classes specializing in public art and TIG and MIG welding at The Steel Yard in Providence, RI since 2014.
