Volcanism and Volcanic Processes in Montserrat and Nevis, West Indies

Faculty Sponsor: Malcolm Rutherford

Michael looked at the products of past volcanic eruptions on Nevis Island, West Indies. The minerals that erupted in the lava flows record in their chemistry what pressure and temperature the lava was subjected to under the volcano, and thus allowed for the determination of the magma storage conditions under the island. He hoped to contribute to a greater understanding of the timing and mechanics of magma mixing and magma ascent rates on the island.

Michael currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at Washington University in St. Louis. Mike did his postdoctoral research in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Mike received his Ph.D. in 2011 from MIT (in the joint program between MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution).
