Go Goa Gone: Exploring The Portuguese Postcolonial Legacy in India’s Smallest State

Project:

In the 450 years that the Portuguese ruled Goa, they left their vivid imprints on its politics, economics, and society. Their legacy is a capsule of culture and communal amity that is threatened by the rise of Hindu Nationalism in India. Through conducting interviews with scholars and local residents, my research seeks to uplift and provide agency to the voices of ordinary Goans. While critically examining the colonial past, my analysis will also leverage secondary sources to forge connections to the state’s current outcomes. This project will be the first of its kind in scope and methodology, aiming to fill the void of in-depth analyses of Portuguese colonies in Indian historical literature.
