Vanessa will conduct a comparative analysis of identity formation in New World African populations for her senior honors thesis. Her study will take an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the social construction of race. Pinard will examine the mulatto image in Haitian "nativist" art, Brazilian samba and the Harlem Renaissance literary movement in the United States.
