Comprehensive Stroke Centers demonstrate the ability to evaluate and treat the most complex stroke cases and provide comprehensive services focused on acute management, risk factor modification and recovery. The Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) at Rhode Island Hospital does this in a state-of-the-art setting with access to the latest treatment and technology. We provide care to more than 1,100 patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) annually in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Our CSC includes the following facilities:

Stroke/Neurosciences Unit
Our 20-bed stroke/neurosciences opened in 2017. It is located in the Bridge Bldg on the 7th floor at Rhode Island Hospital. It is shared between vascular neurology and neurosurgery and is adjacent to the neurocritical care unit.

Neurocritical Care Unit
The 18-bed closed Neurocritical Care Unit is also located on Bridge 7 and is divided equally between 2 teams lead by 2 neurointensivists, 7 days/week.

Neurointerventional Radiology Suite
Our neurointerventional radiologists treat patients for a variety of conditions. The most common conditions are acute strokes and brain aneurysms. Our dedicated suite is adjacent to the CT scanner and MRI in the emergency department to ensure timely treatment.

MRI perfusion imaging
Available 24/7 with RAPID software and vessel wall imaging in the emergency department.

TIA/observation unit
Patients with mild or resolved deficits after a stroke/TIA can be admitted under observation status in the emergency dept 7 days/week for expedited work up in under 12 hours.

Cerebrovascular Lab
Available 7 days/week, our technicians perform transcranial dopplers and carotid ultrasounds with advanced techniques including bubble study and HITS monitoring.
