Understanding the impact of COVID-19 in nursing centers

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, research projects conducted by the Center for Long-Term Care Quality & Innovation (Q&I) and Center for Gerontology & Healthcare Research (Gerontology) have focused on the impact of SARS-CoV-19 and COVID-19 vaccination in nursing centers. We were able to quickly pivot to these high-priority topics thanks to our provider partnerships and big data holdings.

A new Issue Brief highlights findings from various projects in our diverse COVID-19 portfolio and illustrates how our work has informed nursing center practice and policy in near real-time. We began by examining the impact of the pandemic on nursing home staff and the delivery of telemedicine, then, when residents and staff were prioritized for COVID-19 vaccination in late 2020, expanded to examine staff vaccine coverage and reasons for hesitancy and the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccines among residents.
