PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will deliver the 92nd Stephen A. Ogden Jr. ’60 Memorial Lecture on International Affairs on Monday, April 18.

Titled “The Iran Deal, Non-Proliferation and Global Nuclear Security,” the secretary's presentation will discuss President Obama's nuclear security agenda and the role of the Iran deal in improving U.S. national security. Moniz will also highlight the unique role that Department of Energy scientists and technical experts played in ensuring unprecedented scientific verification in the deal.

The secretary's presentation will draw on his experiences as a key negotiator of the Iran deal and his long professional experience in the field including academic research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and government service in the Clinton administration.

Moniz’s lecture begins at 4 p.m. in the Salomon Center for Teaching’s DeCiccio Family Auditorium on the College Green at Brown. The event is free and open to the public.

As the U.S. secretary of energy, Moniz is tasked with the implementation of missions in support of President Obama's goals of growing the economy, enhancing security and protecting the environment.

A longtime professor of physics and engineering systems, Moniz has served on the MIT faculty for more than 40 years. Most recently, he served as the founding director of the MIT Energy Initiative and director of the MIT Laboratory for Energy and the Environment, which placed him at the forefront of the future of nuclear power, nuclear fuel cycles, natural gas and solar energy in a low-carbon world.

Previously, he served as under secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy and as associate director for science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President.

Moniz is a fellow of the of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Humboldt Foundation, and the American Physical Society. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Boston College and a doctorate in theoretical physics from Stanford University.

The Stephen A. Ogden Jr. ’60 Memorial Lecture

Since 1965, the Ogden Lecture Series has presented the University and its neighboring communities with authoritative and timely addresses about international affairs. The series was established in memory of Stephen A. Ogden Jr., a member of the Brown Class of 1960, who died in 1963 from injuries he suffered in a car accident during his junior year. His family created the series as a tribute to Ogden’s interest in advancing international peace and understanding.

Dozens of heads of state, diplomats, and observers of the international scene have participated in the series, including Queen Noor of Jordan, former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, President of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell, former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, media innovator Ted Turner, astronaut Sen.
