PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Brown Center for Students of Color hosted a block party to celebrate the center's 40th anniversary. The party launched a year’s worth of events marking the milestone, which will include a variety of panels, lectures, digital and traditional exhibits featuring archival material from the center, and other events and programs.
Founded as the Third World Center by Brown students in 1976, the Brown Center for Students of Color serves as a gathering place for communities of color and advances the University’s mission by empowering students of color, cultivating leadership, critical reflection and informed action, and promoting social justice. Originally housed in the basement of Churchill House, the center relocated in 1986 to Partridge Hall on Brown Street directly across from the College Green.
In conjunction with its name change in 2014, the Brown Center for Students of Color embarked upon a five-year strategic effort to strengthen its core activities, extend its reach in the community and honor its legacy on the Brown campus.
