PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] —The David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown will present “And men turned their faces from there,” an exhibit by Fatma Bucak, an artist whose video performances, photographs and installations grapple with the poetics, pragmatics and human consequences of borders, according to Ian Alden Russell, the gallery’s curator.

An opening reception and artist talk will be held on Friday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the gallery, which is located in Brown’s List Art Center at 64 College Street. The exhibition will run through Feb. 5, 2017, and presents a selection of Bucak’s recent video performances alongside new works addressing media censorship, state violence and mass migration.

Bucak was born in Iskenderun, Turkey, a town on the Syrian border, and her new work deals with the Kurdish conflict in Turkey and along the Turkish–Syrian border. Among the works exploring those tensions are 84 photographs and a video performance documenting the washing of twelve weeks of Turkish newspapers by Bucak and two other women, and a paragraph written in ink made from the ashes of a book, meant to testify to the burning of a Kurdish independent publisher’s warehouse.
