Women’s soccer dominates in opening round, advances in NCAA tournament

After shutting out Quinnipiac with a 3-0 victory, the Bears are among 32 teams headed to Round 2 of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — They’re going back to Cali.

For the third time in four seasons, the Brown University women’s soccer team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.

After a first-round victory over Quinnipiac University, the Bears are one of 32 teams headed to round two. They’ll play next on Friday, Nov. 17, against Mississippi State University in a matchup hosted by Stanford University.

In a Saturday, Nov. 11, game attended by more than 1,000 fans at Brown's Stevenson-Pincince Field, the Bears emerged victorious over the Quinnipiac Bobcats with a 3-0 win.

Senior forward Ava Seelenfreund secured the Bears’ first goal, while sophomore defender Layla Shell added her third goal of the year — her first since scoring two goals in the team's season opener in August  —  to make the score 2-0 at halftime. With 35 seconds remaining, senior forward Brittany Raphino closed out the game with her 13th goal of the season, bringing the raucous crowd to its feet.

"The team played tremendous from start to finish," Head Coach Kia McNeill said. "I'm happy for us to be one of 32 teams playing. We were able to get a shutout against a good team in Quinnipiac, and... showed how strong our team is."

Third-seeded Brown will face sixth-seeded Mississippi State on Friday, Nov. 17. If the Bears win, they will advance to the tournament’s third round on Sunday, Nov. 19, going up against the winner of Friday’s match between Stanford and the University of South Carolina.
