PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — The Corporation of Brown University, the University’s governing body, has elected Brian T. Moynihan, a 1981 Brown graduate and chair and CEO of Bank of America, to a second three-year term as Brown’s 22nd chancellor, effective July 1, 2027.
President Christina H. Paxson announced the renewal of the chancellor’s term in a Friday, Nov. 6, message to the Brown community. Officers of the Corporation, including the chancellor, can serve up to three three-year terms.
The chancellor is a volunteer role that leads the 54-member Brown Corporation. The Corporation is responsible for matters of policy and long-term planning and holds pivotal responsibilities including selecting the president, approving faculty appointments, setting the budget, tuition and salary pools, and approving strategic plans. Members of the Corporation serve as ultimate fiduciaries of the University. In general, the Corporation governs matters of policy and does not become involved in the daily administration of the University. The chancellor serves as one of four elected officers, along with the vice chancellor, treasurer and secretary.
With Paxson completing her final academic year as Brown’s president after her decision to depart after 15 years of leadership, Moynihan is currently co-chairing, with Vice Chancellor Pamela Ress Reeves, the Presidential Selection Committee of the Corporation.
Moynihan has been a member of the Corporation since 2010, serving for six years as a trustee and eight years on the Board of Fellows before succeeding Samuel M. Mencoff as chancellor in 2024. He has served on multiple Corporation committees, as well as the President's Leadership Council and the Board of Governors for what is now the Watson School of International and Public Affairs.
A history concentrator and member of the rugby team, Moynihan earned a bachelor of arts from Brown in 1981 and went on to earn his law degree from the University of Notre Dame. He has served as chair and CEO of Bank of America since 2010. On the Brown Corporation, he served as a trustee from 2010 to 2016 and a fellow from 2016 to 2024, and he began his first term as Brown’s 22nd chancellor on July 1, 2024. Previously, he served in another volunteer role as a member of the President's Leadership Council.
