Update: Transition to Remote Learning

Hi U-FLi Community,

We hope you are all taking good care of yourselves in this time of transition. Please remember that our strengths as a community enable us to collectively support each other and remain resourceful. We understand the numerous challenges and concerns that many have articulated over the past few weeks and remain committed to providing avenues for support, guidance, and connection. As such, we encourage you to contact the professional staff of the center or other support systems you might have.

Moving forward, we are offering two main ways us to remain engaged with each other: 

  1. #UFLiStories Project that will serve as a platform for our community to decompress and connect with each other via social media. (Examples include: Community Narratives Project, U-FLi QT's of Color Virtual Community Space, and Graduating Student Digital Yearbook)
  2. Virtual Office Hours with Julio and Renata for general advising. Students should contact Julio ([email protected]) or Renata ([email protected]) directly to schedule an appointment via phone or zoom. 

Finally, please be on the lookout for messages from other administrative offices that may contact you with additional guidance and resources. More information may also become available through the university's centralized site regarding COVID-19.

Rest assured that we are in close communication with other staff colleagues that are part of our larger network of support for the U-FLi community.

Undocumented, First-Generation College, and Low-Income Student Center

The Undocumented, First-Generation College and Low-Income Student Center (U-FLi Center) is a communal, learning, and advocacy space for members of the Brown community who identify with the undocumented, first-generation college, and/or low-income student experience.

By providing undergraduate students with a dedicated space that affirms their intersectional identities, the U-FLi Center aims to contribute to the endurance and success of U-FLi students at Brown University.

Who does the center support?

While the term "first-generation college student" is defined as a student whose parents did not complete a four-year college education, at Brown we encourage students to think of the term more broadly. We welcome any student who self-identifies as having minimal prior exposure to or knowledge of experiences like those at Brown.

As far as the term "low-income students," there is no income level that determines eligibility for students to take advantage of the community and programs of the U-FLi Center, though generally engaged students have little or no expected parent contribution as part of their financial aid package. Students who advocated for the inclusion of low-income students in the title of the Center had powerful stories for how their experience as low-income impacted their time at Brown and both the impact of finding a community and the desire for increased coordination of support.

An "undocumented student" is defined as a student who is not a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States, and who does not hold a visa to reside in the U.S. Undocumented students can find information about financial, legal, and emotional support through the Undocumented Student Program of the Center, as well as the Brown Immigrant Rights Coalition.  The U-FLi Center also works closely with students who may identify with the "undocu-plus" experience (DACA-mented students, TPS holders, or students from mixed-status families).
