Holidays
Human Resources Policy: 20.051The University observes 11 holidays annually. Employees on the regular payroll may be eligible for holiday pay according to the following guidelines. The University reserves the right to modify or change its holiday schedule without notice except for those holidays designated by state law.
Officially Recognized University Holidays
The administrative offices of the University will be closed on the following holidays (or designated holiday observation days, when applicable):

* When Independence Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Brown may adjust its holiday schedule to observe the holiday on either the preceding Friday or the following Monday. Observance of the New Year's Day, Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day holidays may also be adjusted in years in which a Winter Break is announced. Winter Break may include both holiday observances and additional days that are not officially recognized University holidays. The Human Resources Department will produce a schedule with precise holiday observation dates each calendar year and will distribute or post the schedule as appropriate.
Note: Individual departments may be required to remain open on some of the designated holidays or Winter Break days.
Eligibility for Holiday Pay
Employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 975 hours per year are eligible to receive holiday pay. Employees may not begin or end employment or an unpaid leave of absence on a holiday. Employees are not paid for holidays occurring during an unpaid leave.
Holiday Pay for Employees Working Part-Time 12 Months a Year
Employees who are part-time, non-exempt or those working nonstandard work weeks are eligible for holiday pay based on their percent time worked. Holiday pay for part-time employees is calculated by multiplying a full day of holiday time by the percent time the employee works. Exempt employees are paid on a salary basis and will receive their regular pay for weeks in which a holiday occurs, without the need to modify their work schedule. For specific information, please contact the Benefits Office.
Holiday Pay for Employees Working Less than 12 Months a Year or Alternative Work Arrangements
Employees working non-standard work weeks are eligible for holiday pay based on their percentage time worked. For specific information on calculating holiday time, please refer to the Guidelines for Managing Holidays for Eligible Part-time, Non-Exempt Staff.
