Academic action plans address specific steps that Brown's academic departments will take to identify and consider candidates from historically underrepresented groups when replacing retiring or departing faculty, as well as steps to build and sustain a culture of inclusion.

Every academic unit at Brown has been called upon to submit an approved Departmental Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DDIAP) aligned with the University's set of concrete actions to address discrimination that can interfere with Browns' vision of sustaining a campus environment where all members can fulfill their potential as scholars and leaders.

Requiring the DDIAPs was a specific action step of Pathways to Diversity and Inclusion: An Action Plan for Brown University, commonly known as the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).
