Updated Guidance: Research & Startup Expenditures

February 4, 2021

Members of the Faculty,

I write with some changes to the my memo of AUgust 28, 2020, on the use of University-provided research and startup funds. Effective immediately, dean’s permission will no longer be required for the use of startup and research funds for valid research-related purposes. Examples of allowable expenses include research equipment, computers, books, subscriptions to data services, professional society dues, and the hiring of technical staff, postdoctoral fellows, and student researchers.

As always, expenditures are subject to Brown's policies, and all items purchased with University funds are property of the university. Professional service agreements will continue to require additional review as described on this website. Faculty members should consult with their department chair and/or dean in advance of a purchase or hire if there are questions about the expense.

It is our hope that this change will facilitate your research programs while reducing the administrative burden on department staff.

Regards,

Richard M. Locke
