Biography

Leela Gandhi is John Hawkes Professor of Humanities and English. She is the author of several works, including The Common Cause: Postcolonial Ethics and the Practice of Democracy, 1900– 1955 (2014), and Affective Communities: Anticolonial Thought and the Politics of Friendship (2006). She serves as joint Associate Director of the Centre for Contemporary South Asia, and will lead the Pembroke Seminar on “The Cultures of Pacifism”, in AY 2017-2018. 

Overview

This talk will take stock of recent developments in postcolonial theory. I will suggest that postcolonial theory is a modern philosophy of renunciation that offers a unique proposal for uninjured life and non-injurious community.
