Sandra Smith appointed dean of Brown’s School of Professional Studies

Bringing a unique blend of academic experience and business acumen, Smith will oversee a portfolio of programs that are academically rigorous, financially sustainable and in demand from students and employers.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Sandra Smith, an accomplished leader with more than 25 years of experience in higher education, strategic consulting and private industry, has been appointed dean of Brown University’s School of Professional Studies, effective July 1, 2025.

As dean, Smith will oversee academic programs, operations, finances and staff for the School of Professional Studies. She will lead efforts to advance the school’s mission to create and deliver programs that empower learners at all career stages to transform themselves, their workplaces and the communities they serve.

Smith has served as interim dean of the school since January 2025. In a Thursday, May 29, campus message announcing her appointment as dean, Brown Provost Francis J. Doyle III said she has demonstrated adept leadership as interim dean with clear strategic vision, an inclusive leadership style and a deep understanding of Brown’s collaborative culture.

“Sandra brings a powerful combination of entrepreneurial thinking and academic rigor — qualities that will be essential as the School of Professional Studies aims to expand its reach and impact,” Doyle wrote. “She sees the school evolving into a leading hub for lifelong learning, with offerings that span certificates to master’s degrees and meet students where they are in their personal and professional journeys.”

Reporting to Doyle, Smith will serve as a member of the president’s cabinet, the president’s executive committee and the provost’s leadership group of senior academic deans. Her responsibilities will include developing and managing a growing portfolio of degree and non-degree programs, expanding access to new learner populations, and overseeing initiatives to support students and employees. In addition, she will support other Brown schools and departments in expanding master’s programs by providing enrollment management, student services and career support resources.

As interim dean, Smith helped to develop three new online master’s programs, strengthened collaboration with faculty across academic departments and laid the groundwork for the school to grow, with a strong commitment to academic quality and fiscal responsibility. Prior to becoming interim dean, she helped to establish and grow the school’s master’s in technology leadership program and launched the non-credit portfolio at Brown in her previous role as senior associate dean for executive education.

Smith said she’s eager to help advance Brown’s mission through innovative, high-impact programs that prepare professionals to lead in a rapidly changing world.

“The School of Professional Studies has a vital role to play in extending Brown’s academic excellence to new audiences, and I look forward to working with our outstanding faculty and talented staff across Brown to expand that impact,” Smith said.

The landscape of master’s and professional education is undergoing a profound transformation, she noted, globally, nationally and on Brown’s campus directly. Master’s programs at the University have grown significantly in recent years, reflecting both rising student demand and Brown’s commitment to serving students at all stages of their educational journeys.

“Learners today seek programs that are flexible, relevant and deeply connected to the complex challenges they face,” Smith said. “Brown’s commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary thinking makes it uniquely positioned to shape the future of professional and lifelong education.”

Before her arrival at Brown in 2015, Smith consulted with Catalyst Strategies, Recon Strategy and the Boston Consulting Group, focusing primarily on developing growth strategies for leading technology and services companies. Her former clients include executives at Agilent, Blue Cross Blue Shield, eBay, Hewlett Packard and Intuit. She also served as director of advised services at Charles Schwab — where she launched and managed solutions for the company’s largest customer segment while overseeing technology platform development, marketing, sales, operations and other functional areas — and in leadership roles with Bell Canada.

Smith earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and both a master of applied science and a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering with honors from the University of Toronto. In Providence, she has served as a commissioner in the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission for the State of Rhode Island for 10 years, and an executive committee member of the board of trustees for the Wheeler School for the past five years.

Doyle said Smith’s perspective on the future of the School of Professional Studies aligns strongly with Brown’s priorities and strengths.

“Sandra’s unique blend of academic experience and business acumen positions her to lead the school in ways that are responsive to evolving student needs and grounded in Brown’s values,” Doyle wrote. “Her understanding of the work and careers across multiple sectors, organizational leadership, and the skills needed for professional success will enable her to lead the creation of programs that are academically rigorous, financially sustainable and in demand from students and employers alike.”
