PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — The Brown University campus hummed with activity on Wednesday, June 11, as nearly 2,000 employees celebrated Staff Development Day. Now in its 31st year, the daylong event honored staff members’ contributions and offered opportunities for professional development, personal wellness and community engagement, both on campus and beyond.
Vice President for Human Resources Marie Williams welcomed and thanked staff before a morning keynote by Sarah Latham, executive vice president for finance and administration, at the Salomon Center for Teaching. In the context of challenging headwinds facing higher education, Latham celebrated Brown’s sustained 261-year legacy and impact, and offered guidance on navigating uncertainty and change by embracing agency and advancing collaboration.
“The age of radical interdependence requires us to engage in these kinds of deeper, richer collaborations with people… to fulfill our mission and move the organization forward,” Latham said. “We all need to think of ourselves as leaders and as innovators, regardless of our job title. This is critical at any time — it is especially critical in times of uncertainty.”
