The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is pleased to recognize outstanding research achievements of Brown faculty through the Research Achievement Awards program. Awards are given annually that each carry a research award of $5,000. A committee of faculty will review nominations and select the award recipients. OVPR invites nominations from deans, department chairs, and center directors, and also invites self-nominations and nominations by colleagues. Awardees will be honored at a University-wide research celebration in the spring, at which OVPR will also acknowledge the recipients of the annual Research Seed and Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research awards.

EARLY CAREER RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Early Career Research Achievement awards will be given in four areas: (1) Humanities and Social Sciences, (2) Physical Sciences, (3) Life Sciences and Public Health, and (4) Hospital-based research faculty. These awards are for a member of the faculty at the Assistant Professor level, or who was promoted to Associate Professor effective July 1, 2022 and later, in recognition of an exemplary portfolio of research achievement during their first years at Brown. These awards are offered annually.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor

  • Faculty at the rank of Associate Professor who were promoted to Associate Professor effective July 1, 2022 or later

  • Adjunct and visiting faculty are not eligible

CRITERIA:

The overall merit of the research achievement will be considered and evaluated by a committee of faculty reviewers, convened by the Vice President for Research. The final selection will be made based on the following criteria:

  • Scholarly achievements and recognition (publications, professional awards, funded research etc.).

  • Significance of contributions to the discipline

DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Distinguished Research Achievement awards will be given in four areas: (1) Humanities and Social Sciences, (2) Physical Sciences, (3) Life Sciences and Public Health, and (4) Hospital-based research faculty. These awards are for faculty at the rank of full professor. The purpose of the award is to recognize faculty who have demonstrated a record of exceptional research achievements throughout their career at Brown and have received national and/or international peer acclaim for their research within the last few calendar years.

The Distinguished Research Achievement Award will be offered every other year and will alternate with the Mid-Career Research Achievement Award.*

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Any professor at the rank of full professor is eligible.

  • Emeritus, adjunct, and visiting faculty are not eligible.

CRITERIA:

The overall merit of the research achievement will be considered and evaluated by a committee of faculty reviewers, convened by the Vice President for Research. The final selection will be made based on the following criteria:

  • Scholarly achievements and recognition (publications, professional awards, funded research etc.).

  • Significance of contributions to his/her discipline.

  • Evidence of national and/or international recognition for their research within the last few calendar years

Consideration will be given to especially distinguished researchers who have also contributed notably to mentorship and university community.

FOR ALL AWARDS:

AMOUNT:

  • Each award carries a research award of $5,000.

NOMINATION PROCESS:

  • OVPR will solicit nominations in the fall from deans, department chairs, and center directors. Self-nominations and nominations by colleagues will also be invited.

  • Nominations may be submitted electronically via UFunds from Thursday, October 13, 2022, through 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023.

NOMINATION MATERIALS:

  • A letter of nomination from dean, department chair, center director, Brown faculty colleague, or nominee (self-nominations permitted) addressing evidence and significance of the candidate's research achievements. (Limit: 1 page)

  • One supporting letter from a faculty colleague. (Limit: 1 page)

  • The candidate’s current curriculum vitae.

REVIEW PROCESS:

  • A committee of faculty will review nominations and select the award recipients. The committee will be convened by the Vice President for Research, configured each year to avoid direct conflicts of interest with respect to nominees.

  • Selections will be announced at the annual Celebration of Research in the Spring.

TIMELINE:

Nominations Open on UFunds: Thursday, October 13, 2022
Nominations Close: EXTENDED - Monday, January 30, 2023 (9:00 a.m.) [from Tuesday, January 17, 2023 (5:00 p.m.)]
Selection (on or about): Friday, March 17, 2023
Celebration of Research: April 2023
