Shukla Lab - Repurposing niclosamide as a versatile antimicrobial surface coating against device-associated, hospital-acquired bacterial infections

July 12, 2017

The Shukla lab is repurposing FDA approved drugs for antimicrobial therapies to reduce the time and cost associated with drug discovery and development. Their recent publication in Biomedical Materials highlights niclosamide.  Their article “Repurposing niclosamide as a versatile antimicrobial surface coating against device-associated, hospital-acquired bacterial infections” reports the utility and efficacy of coating devices with niclosamide to clear and prevent the formation of biofilms. The lead author of the study was undergraduate student Tinotenda Gwisai.  Co-authors included research assistant Nisha Hollingsworth, undergraduate Sarah Cowles, and collaborators in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Rhode Island Hospital.
