At Brown, arts and cultural opportunities abound
On any given week, Brown hosts an extraordinary variety of arts and cultural events. From lectures to performances, exhibitions, conferences, concerts, readings, film screenings and more, life on campus is rich in opportunity.
Brown’s Vital Arts Culture
Brown emphasizes embedding the arts into every aspect of the curriculum, and co-curricular activities abound. Students from all walks of life and every part of campus are encouraged to take part in the arts, whether they opt to join one of Brown’s long-established performing arts groups, create a new project or club of their own, or try their hand at curating, producing, experimenting with and forging new forms of art and performance.
A catalyzing force for the arts is the Brown Arts Initiative, comprising six academic departments and two programs. The Brown Arts Initiative brings together ideas, expertise, skills, spaces, partners and audiences to create new opportunities for student and faculty collaboration and experimentation in the arts.
Prominent and thought-provoking artists and thinkers come to the University, bringing the campus community into conversation with those who are redefining technological and artistic frontiers and deepening scholarship. And students are not mere spectators, but often engage directly with these luminaries — ranging from renowned cultural critics to celebrated performers and art makers — through seminars, class visits, workshops, master classes or meetings.
