What/when were you at Brown?

Graduate student and postdoc. 2000-2006.

What do you do now? Provide a brief description of what you do for a living and what drives you professionally.

I am Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Member of the Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience at the University of Waterloo in Canada. What does it mean to "attend?" I seek to understand the behavior, physiology, brain mechanisms and computational principles that explain how is that what we consciously perceive seems to be a consequence of our priorities and expectations built up through time by our interactions with the world.

How did your experience at Brown (in the lab, in the classroom, and in the Brown community) prepare you for what you do today?

During my graduate training, the discussions, classes, research and face-to-face interactions I had with both faculty and my fellow graduate students provided me with multiple, interdisciplinary perspectives on core problems in the brain sciences. I participated in everything from writing computer code, to developing models, to analyzing the neuronal firing patterns occurring during behavior. These examples, and the knowledge gained, have allowed me to build my own research group for delving into questions that straddle the border between psychology and neuroscience.
