Photos: Open studio event showcases creativity of Brown University artists

Students and faculty in Brown’s Department of Visual Art opened their studios and classrooms to display and converse about their creative work at an open-to-the-public event.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Visual art concentrators are often known to log long hours in their studios, prompting curious friends and family to ask: What have you been making in there?

They had the opportunity to answer that question during a late-April open studio event, which welcomed members of the Brown community and the general public to Brown’s List Art Building, where students and faculty members displayed and discussed the artistic creations they’ve been making throughout the academic year.

Dozens of students presented works, including sculptures, paintings, prints, collages and knitwear, throughout the building. Students enrolled in introductory courses hung their creations on classroom walls, while art concentrators who have their own studios for the academic year invited others to step into their personal workspaces.

“I really like organizing this event because it allows people to share work who probably wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to, especially those who aren’t necessarily art concentrators, or who are taking the larger foundational classes,” said event organizer Hannah Bashkow, a member of Brown’s Class of 2023 who is now a teaching assistant in Brown’s Visual Art Department. “It also offers a nice excuse for people to wander around and see everything that happens in the building.”

For visual arts concentrator Mira Goodman, a member of the Class of 2024, the event marked her first open studio. She displayed part of her honors thesis project: four larger-scale paintings, along with a few smaller sculptures.

“This event is an excellent way for students to display their work to the larger Brown and Providence communities,” Goodman said. “It gives us a chance to show all the hard work and dedication we've put in all year.”
