Graduate Program

Director of Graduate Studies: Professor Dennis Hogan

The Department has developed an exciting program of studies at the Graduate level. The curriculum that has evolved over the last several years builds on the strength of faculty research interests and their commitment to excellence. The students and faculty engage in extensive collaboration in research and teaching, and there is close mentoring of students. Financial support to cover tuition and living costs is available to almost all continuing doctoral students and includes teaching and research assistantships, as well as university and departmental fellowships and traineeships. Areas of specialization within sociology cover a wide spectrum of interest among faculty. Research and teaching collaboration between sociology faculty members and faculty in other departments, programs, and institutes within Brown University enriches the curricular offerings in sociology.

The Department offers a program for the Ph.D. degree. Students may ordinarily earn a Master's degree as part of the Ph.D. program.

Two programs that have close links with Sociology and offer interdisciplinary training and additional resources are the Graduate Program in Development (GPD) and the Population Studies and Training Program (PSTC).
