The University Resources Committee, composed of faculty, students and administrators, is responsible for recommending Brown’s annual operating and capital budget to the president.
As Brown pursues its mission to make a positive impact by advancing knowledge and understanding, the University continually invests in the people, resources and facilities to make that possible. Decisions on how and where resources are allocated are based on recommendations from the University Resources Committee.
As part of Brown’s strong commitment to shared governance — the joint responsibility of the University community to inform and participate in decision-making — the committee is composed of faculty, staff, students and senior administrators. Together, they make recommendations on Brown’s annual operating budget, including tuition and salary increases. The committee focuses on balancing the Brown community’s current needs with the need to safeguard resources and opportunities for future generations.
Brown is committed to the thoughtful stewardship of financial resources as the University aspires to the highest levels of academic and operational excellence.
Over the course of each academic year, the committee reviews and analyzes a wide range of financial information related to University operations. After careful review and thoughtful discussion, the committee makes recommendations on key issues, including University-wide employee salary pools as well as tuition and fees.
Following consultation with the University president, the recommended operating budget is presented to the Corporation of Brown University, Brown’s highest governing board, for review at its annual spring meeting.
Throughout the process, the committee’s decisions are grounded in the priorities of the Brown community.
