PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — When Terrell Osborne first learned about Brown University’s Pre-College Programs in 2023, college was barely on his radar.
Then a sophomore at Providence’s Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School, Osborne had not yet pictured himself pursuing higher education and knew little about the college opportunities available close to home. That began to change when he attended an information session about Brown’s summer programs. With full scholarship support available to every admitted Providence Public School District student, Osborne applied to and enrolled in a two-week pre-college course that brought together his interests in biology, engineering and computer science.
That experience, he said, was a turning point.
“Being around students and faculty who were genuinely passionate about ideas made me realize that kind of intellectual environment was something I wanted to be in,” Osborne said.
Today, Osborne is double-majoring in computer science and biology at the University of Rhode Island. He credits his time at Brown with helping prepare him for the transition to college and giving him the confidence to pursue opportunities in undergraduate research, internships and entrepreneurship.
“Brown raised the ceiling for what I thought was possible,” he said.
Osborne is among hundreds of Providence students who have enrolled in Brown’s Pre-College Programs since the University launched a new scholarship model in 2023. The initiative guarantees full scholarships to every admitted PPSD student, covering all direct expenses including courses, housing, meals and fees. To date, close to 500 PPSD students have participated — this summer, program leaders are welcoming another 175.
