Brown continued to receive high marks from students and families for its distinctive educational experience. The University landed the No. 5 spot for U.S. News’ “First-year Experiences,” among other ratings based on student experience and academic program attributes. Brown ranked among the nation’s “Top 10 Dream Schools for Parents” in the Princeton Review’s annual “College Hopes and Worries Survey,” which rated topics including financial aid, academic reputation and best programs to support students’ career interests. And Brown earned the No. 12 spot on Niche’s list of “Best Colleges in America.”

“While rankings cannot fully capture the characteristics that define Brown, these recognitions reflect the University’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and serving the community, the nation and the world,” University officials said.

Recognitions for research and discovery

In recognition of Brown’s place among America’s leading research universities, the University earned a range of notable rankings for academic programs and impact. Brown earned the No. 14 spot for economics on ShanghaiRanking’s “2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects,” which evaluates universities for world-class faculty, high-impact research and international collaboration.

The National Academy of Inventors placed Brown on its “Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents in 2025” list, which highlights institutions that secure intellectual property through patents, thereby translating research into commercial technologies with “tangible societal and economic impact.”

Brown was included in the inaugural Cure Innovation Index, which recognizes schools with top researchers and clinicians who are translating scientific discovery into patient treatments. And the “2026 Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings” — which measure scholars’ influence on educational practice and policy — included six Brown faculty members among a list of the top 200 scholars at U.S. universities.

The Princeton Review’s profile of Brown in its “Best 392 Colleges: 2027 Edition” cited the University’s strengths in learning across disciplines, its signature Open Curriculum that enables academic exploration and faculty who “are at the top of their fields and are working on research that pushes those fields forward.” And Brown earned the No. 5 spot for “2027 Colleges with the Best Professors in America” from Niche.

In the U.S. News “2026 Best Graduate Schools” guide, Brown appeared on lists recognizing its strengths in medical research, computer science, physics, engineering, sociology, public affairs and more. In the graduate program rankings, Brown placed No. 8 nationally for English, No. 11 for Earth sciences, No. 13 for history, No. 15 for both economics and mathematics, and No. 18 for public health, among many recognitions.

Times Higher Education’s “World University Rankings 2026” placed Brown among the top 40 schools globally for “Business and Economics.” LinkedIn ranked Brown No. 5 in its first-ever ranking of the “Top Colleges for Engineering and Computer Science Majors,” while Brown earned a spot among the top 15 schools nationally for computer science by Niche.

Brown as a leader in student support and return on investment

In lists rating affordability, Brown was recognized for its financial aid, earning the No. 15 spot from U.S. News for “Best Value Schools,” which recognizes those with the strongest academic quality and need-based financial aid, and the No. 21 spot on Princeton Review’s “Best Value Colleges.” Money gave Brown its maximum five-star rating on its “Best Colleges in America 2026” list, which assesses financial aid, graduation rates and alumni career success.

In other rankings, Forbes placed Brown at No. 18 on “America’s Top Colleges” list for the third year in a row, which recognizes schools where students from all economic backgrounds graduate on time, secure high salaries after graduation and complete degrees with little student debt. WalletHub placed Brown at No. 16 in its 2026 rankings, which considers career outcomes, salaries and student debt. And Scholarships360 named Brown to its “Top Colleges for Students in 2026” for student success and affordability, a ranking that considers graduate income, student debt and completion rates. 

In the “Wall Street Journal/College Pulse 2026 Best Colleges in the U.S.” list, Brown was noted among the top schools recognized for boosting graduates’ earnings beyond baseline expectations and quickly repaying the cost of their degree. TIME ranked Brown No. 18 nationally for “Best Colleges for Future Leaders 2026,” which assesses alumni success across employment sectors, achievement of career milestones and socioeconomic mobility. 

PitchBook ranked Brown No. 24 globally for graduating the most entrepreneurs who have raised venture capital in the last decade in its 2026 “University Rankings.” Brown was placed among the top 50 universities globally in TIME magazine’s ranking of “World’s Top Universities of 2026,” which places emphasis on student achievement and alumni success. And Brown earned the No. 25 spot in TIME’s inaugural “America’s Best Colleges of 2026–2027,” which recognized 500 colleges and universities for student outcomes, learning environment and attractiveness to prospective students.

Strong recognition for teaching, civic engagement and making an impact 

Princeton Review ranked Brown No. 7 nationally for “Making an Impact.” And the All In Campus Democracy Challenge recognized Brown among schools that “increase nonpartisan democratic engagement by promoting civic learning, political engagement and college student voter participation.” Brown placed No. 17 on Washington Monthly’s “2026 Best Colleges for Your Tuition Dollars,” which recognizes schools for affordability and access for students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and a commitment to supporting students’ participation in their democracy. 

That commitment to civic engagement was reflected in other recognitions that celebrated Brown’s focus on educating students who serve the community, the nation and the world. Brown received high marks for its social impact and career readiness in the “QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026” rankings, which are designed to measure higher education institutions’ ability to address the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance challenges. 

Brown’s distinctive online master’s degree programs — which provide students across the globe with the professional skills needed to make an impact as leaders at different stages of their careers — were among the degree programs that received recognition. The University’s master’s programs in public health, management and organizational leadership were among those to earn Top 20 marks. 

Internationally, Brown placed No. 7 in the “QS Executive MBA Rankings 2026” for its joint executive MBA program with IE Business School in Spain. 

Among many lists that noted Brown’s real-world research opportunities for students and strengths in distinctive programmatic areas, Brown earned the No. 12 spot for best “Undergraduate Economics” from U.S. News. Niche ranked Brown No. 3 nationally for global studies and international relations, No. 4 for English and education, No. 7 for mathematics, No. 8 for history and environmental sciences, No. 10 for philosophy, No. 11 for religious studies, No. 14 for computer science, No. 16 for anthropology, sociology, psychology, public policy and physics, and No. 18 for economics.

Serving the community as a top employer

In recognition of exceptional support for faculty and staff, Brown was ranked a “Best Employer” in Rhode Island on Forbes’ “America’s Best Employers by State” list, based on criteria including salary and benefits, flexibility and career advancement opportunities. Nationally, Brown was included in Forbes’ list of “America’s Best Employers for Company Culture,” which recognizes employers that treat employees with fairness and respect and empower workers to take initiative and develop new ideas.

Brown was also given top marks for its services to support the University community’s well-being. Those included the top “exemplary winner” designation in the 2026 Worksite Health Awards from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, and the Community Leadership Partner Award from United Way of Rhode Island for Brown’s commitment to supporting Rhode Islanders. 

Providence Business News recognized Brown in the “Healthiest Employers of Rhode Island 2026 Awards” program, which recognizes organizations that advance proactive worksite health and wellness programs for their employees.
