On April 26th, the School of Professional Studies, oSTEM@Brown, and Graduate Students of Color in STEM hosted a Biomedical Engineering Sc.M alumni panel. Panelists Runako Daniel ‘18 ScM‘20, Jessica Powell ScM‘21, and Sheila Velagapudi ScM‘20 discussed their academic and professional histories, their experiences shifting from academia to industry, and offered advice on job search strategies.

Nicolas Fawzi and collaborator Gary Wessel will dissect prion-like domains and test their role in sperm-egg interaction and species specificity by in vitro egg interaction. Kimani Toussaint will develop a novel photoplethysmography (PPG) technique to mitigate the issue of skin tone, and other related skin-based confounding effects such as wrinkles and tattoos, using an optical polarization vector beam.

PhD student Michaela Alarie (Borton Lab), alum Shoham Benmelech '21, incoming PhD student Helen Danielson (Fawzi Lab), and PhD student Alec McCall (Shukla Lab) have each won a three-year National Science Foundation (NSF) fellowship in the Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

With a massive shift under way toward more home-based health care delivery, more than 90 medical professionals and technologists gathered virtually to explore the challenges and opportunities that change presents.
