CSSJ & CSREA Family Weekend Open House

94 & 96 Waterman Street, Providence RI 02906

The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) and the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (CSSJ) invite you to attend a joint open house in celebration of Family Weekend.

CSREA has recently relocated to the historic Lippitt House at 96 Waterman St. On view is an exhibit of photographs by Baltimore artist Devin Allen, titled "Rising/Uprising in Baltimore: A Beautiful Ghetto". Devin Allen’s images of Baltimore document the struggle and humanity of protest following the death of Freddie Gray, as well as the beauty found in community and everyday life.

CSSJ is located in a renovated 19th-century home at 94 Waterman St. On view is an exhibit titled "The Black Shackle: African Americans and the Coal Economy," which examines the stories of the African Americans who migrated from the rural South to make their home in the coal fields of West Virginia, Tennessee, and Eastern Kentucky, a stunning glass wall art piece "Rising to Freedom," and a symbolic slave garden.

Free and open to the public. Both locations are wheelchair accessible, and refreshments will be served.
