Race at the Center of the Humanities

Application deadline: May 1, 2020, for academic year 2020-2021.

CSREA invites faculty whose scholarship focuses on race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States or comparatively, to participate in the Race at the Center of the Humanities Program in AY 2021-22 through the convening of an annual conference.

THE Program

CSREA will partner with Brown faculty, the Cogut Institute for the Humanities and humanities departments to host an annual one-day convening of Brown faculty and graduate students, as well as invited scholars and practitioners, on a theme or topic that centers race in humanistic and humanistic social sciences inquiry. Conferences are slated for early Fall/September.

Opportunities for faculty involvement include:

  • Proposing themes or topics
  • Helping identify/nominating speakers and participants
  • Reviewing conference proposals
  • Serving as panelists or moderators
  • Facilitating breakout sessions and/or workshops

Participants will be asked to provide a brief summary of their activities at the end of the program period.


For Brown University faculty of all ranks in the Humanities, Arts, and Humanistic Social Sciences working on issues of race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States, or U.S.-related transnational contexts.

Applicants must be a member of the regular faculty (lecturer-track, tenured, and tenure-track faculty).


Applicants must complete this application form to be fully considered. Applications will be reviewed by the CSREA Faculty Advisory Board. Other relevant faculty within or external to Brown may be consulted at the discretion of the Board. 


Applications due on May 1, 2020, for conferences in fall 2020 and spring 2021. Awardees notified in June 2020.
